I bought the wood for this mirror about 10 years ago so my memory might be foggy. I think I bought the wood from Superior Hardwoods here in Missoula. I trust them to not mis-represent their products. They all seem to be very knowledgeable there.
Having never heard of Sapele I looked it up on the internet. From the comparisons of it and mahogany I think I do have mahogany. It is a little lighter in color and the grain looks more like the mahogany photos I saw on the web.

Is it really mahogany or is it Sapele?

I find that mahogany darkens fairly quickly on it’s own. Take a scrap piece, sand it to 320 put a thin coat of finish on it and set it in the sun for a couple of weeks. You will get a good idea of how quickly mahogany darkens. If you do stain it know that it will darken more..

Hey guys,
I’m making a frame for a mirror out of mahogany and it’s the 1st time I’ve used mahogany for a project. Would anybody have a suggestion for a stain color? I’m looking for something on the dark side (hmmm, as in darker color not … well, you know, Star Wars dark … oh never mind)
Thanks for the help and Happy New Year!
