[Woodworkers] Tool Prices

I guess I'm one of those guys who sells things at too high of a price.

But, the reason I do it is that people will pay. Here's a few examples:

1.) I (along with Eldon Heibert, formerly of this list) went to the local
Harbor Freight and picked up their 14" 4 speed wood cutting bandsaw for
$219. This was back in 1999. During that time I put on a new Timberwolf
blade ($20) and had a couple of spares to go with it, at $20 each. I also
put on a Rockler bandsaw table for about $80. Added on a Grizzly riser
block for about $50. Added on a quick release blade tensioner for $25. All
said and done, I had about $425 into it. (Yes, for that price, I could have
purchased a much nicer Grizzly, but if you buy HF, you buy a project). That
being said, after using it for 14 years, I sold it on Craigslist for $350.

2.) I picked a little Delta contractors saw on Craigslist. It was a Delta
Model 10, and it came with a Vega fence, a precision miter gauge (can't
recall the name, but it had the sliding arm and I think it started with an
A) and a mobile base. All for $75. I put the Vega fence on my Jet and sold
the Delta with my Jet fence for $150. I sold the mobile base for $50, and
the precision miter gauge sold for about $100.

3.) I purchased a brand new Grizzly 6" jointer in 1999 for about $300. I
can't recall what the shipping was, so I'm approximating. I used it for 12
years and sold it about 2011 for $250. I then turned around and bought a
used Grizzly 8" jointer for $200, and this one came with 4 sets of blades.

On the other hand, I did once purchase a nice old Dewalt RAS at an auction
for $125. Sometime after I purchased it but before I picked it up, they
picked it up with a fork lift and banged it into the shelf above
(industrial metal shelving units like you see in Home Depot). Cracked the
cast iron on it, and I didn't notice until I got home. I hauled that all
the way to Montana to give to Joe, and I think he ended up just parting it
out because it couldn't be fixed. So, there are some loser purchases I've
made as well. :-).

Regards,
-Steve
