[Woodworkers] Dust collection upgrade

X-10??? Is that stuff still around??
I initially used a wireless receiver used in security systems to turn my DC on and off. I had 3 or 4 remotes strategically placed around the shop. Worked well until apparently fine sawdust got into the remotes and the buttons became flakey. Almost 20 years later I figured there had to be something better out there so I went on a quest. Found these car remote sized nifty dust proof and probably water tight on/off buttons and a tiny wireless receiver for dirt cheap from Banggood. Yeah, Joe and Spud Dave, now Colorado Dave would have a fit about buying from them but it was all I could find that fit my plan. Plus the cost was low enough that if it was a failure, oh well. Struggled a bit understanding how to pair the remotes and receiver but once I had it all working it is great. Little remotes at all the machines on the DC so I don’t have to go on a quest to find one that works anymore.

Hi John,

Yes, way back in 2009 we were looking at it. And yes, I still plan to use X10 to turn the DC on and off. I'll take apart an X10 remote and hook it up to a GPIO on whatever microcontroller (probably Arduino) that I end up using.

Regards,
-Steve

I had thought about that years ago however at that time the blast gates were priced for the commercial market. I’d seen several DIY versions and seriously thought about using X10 protocol. Good on ya Steve. BTW, didn’t we have conversations about this subject?

I finally decided to add some automation to my dust collection. Here's a quick sneak peak video

I plan on making the dust collector turn on and the valve open automatically when I turn on each machine. I've had this idea for at least 15 years and I finally decided to do something with it.
