Dave
Here on the East Coast our humidity swings from 35% in the winter to 95% in the summer, so I'm just used to having to take the expansion and contraction factors into consideration when building tables.
I built Cathy a large table for her art work using kiln dried tiger maple with bread board ends and it contracted so much, I took the breadboard ends off and cut them down and re-applied them only to have it contract some more.
I hope I didn't offend you.
Gary

Contraction?  A) Josh does not think that way and this is his rodeo I just facilitateJ  B) Up here in eastern Washington humidity and other factors that would cause expansion are not an issue (do not seem to be an issue).  Our temperature swings are fairly gradual through the seasons and our average humidity is typically below 50 with inside humidity typically in the low 30’s.  C) The wood we have used on all of the tables so far has been recycled and plenty dry so I don’t believe that it is going to move??  We generally acclimate the wood in my shop for a few months and I track the humidity in the shop so I know that it is really stable.  The first table we did was for Josh and it has been in his dining room for 8 years and he said it is as stable as can be, which has kind of been our guide on how to build them.  I guess time will tell.      From: Woodworkers [mailto:woodworkers-bounces at lists.sawdusters.org]On Behalf Of Gary C Williams via Woodworkers

2Dave,     With all of the iron straps, it looks like it won't be able to expand and contract.    Did you allow for any wood movement?    Am I missing something?    Gary    -----Original Message-----

Subject: [Woodworkers] Table update The bottom of the table is done.  We will let it sit for about a week and then Josh will bring the legs and beam over so we can mark the mounting holes.  Then we will flip it over and go to work finishing the top.  Here are the highlights to hopefully answer most questions.   Minwax Natural stain General finishes Enduro Var Urethane* 4 coats.   Metal straps are there to basically keep the bread board ends on when somebody goes to lift it to move it or even sit on it. Strap across the center is just a bit of added security to keep the boards bound together The legs will serve the same purpose on the ends.   * This stuff is not cheap but it is easy to apply and the end finish is tuff.  They actually recommend that it can be used for tables.  First 2 or 3 coats are a bit spooky because the look is not what a guy wants.  After that each coat makes the wood “pop” even more.  We do multiple on the bottoms to makes sure that the end result is what we are after.  The center board on this one will not be as rough or dark on the top.  I think we have ended up at 6 coats on the previous 3 tables to get the best look.    2Dave     _______________________________________________
