[Woodworkers] grainless thin wood?

What kind of wood have you been trying? Basswood and poplar are some
light colored woods with
maybe not as pronounced grain as say pine or something like that. I
have seen a few items laser engraved
in walnut and that appears to burn fairly evenly.
You could call these guys and maybe they could suggest something and
even supply some samples

You could find out if they have any thick veneers or possibly glue a
veneer that works on to a substrate or something.
