[Woodworkers] grainless thin wood?

Tom,
   This may be stating the obvious, but can you resaw the wood? If the issue
is the wood you have is the grain issue, you can get oak, ash, birch maple
from a big box store. How about a lumber yard for maple (which would look
good laser etched)? Steve Wall Lumber is a source but you probably have to
order a large quantity. For small quantities, you can order from Woodcraft
or Rockler. https://www.woodcraft.com/categories/dimensional-lumber

   And if resawing is the issue, perhaps a crafts store like Hobby Lobby
will have what you need.
