[Woodworkers] Dust Collector Again

My wife has been on me for a couple of years to install a cyclone dust collector in my shop. As some of my friends accuse me a being cheap, I am trying to piece together a cyclone dust collector.  I currently have a Jet 1 1/2" HP that I move from machine to machine. There are plenty of videos that show using the HF 2 hp dust collector motor and impeller assembly, with a cyclone. I know the impeller size is critical for moving chips and dust. I have read on Bill Penz's  site, that you really need a 5 hp in order to get the air movement necessary to move the fine dust. I'm a little confused, because if a motor is running at 3450 rpm's, then it seems to me, that no matter what the  hp, they are all going to move the same amount of dust and chips through the piping. I understand the resistance issue, but am a little confused how a 5 hp versus a 2 hp is going to move more air through a 6 inch pipe. Certainly if you put so much dust and chips through the impeller, that it is overloaded, I can see where the 5 hp would have the strength to move everything better than a 2 hp. But short of overloading the system, I don't get it. I figure that I can piece one together for about a $ 1,000.00, including a remote starter, Wynn filters, stand, and collection barrell. I know that some on here have the Clear-Vue cyclone and are happy with its performance.  I was ready the other day to order the Clear-Vue, but just didn't do it.




Can anyone enlighten me?
