[Woodworkers] Baking Soda blasting

I am in the middle of a roll top desk refinishing project. Because of this
desk being all oak veneer I am not using a stripper for fear of it lifting
the veneer, so, we're scraping the finish off.
My question here deals with the tambour door - the slats have a really
goofy profile, which would make scraping really difficult and certainly
very time consuming.
The wood making up the door is solid oak - does anyone have first hand
knowledge of using soda as a blasting media on wood without it being harsh.
Further, I don't want to use a stripper on this door for fear of harming
the canvas fabic.
That is all.
