I replaced a 10:" Bosch sliding compound saw with the Festool. The Festool can bevel in both directions, whereas the Bosch only beveled in one direction. Even though they are expensive, I love my Festool.

Specifically, it's a sliding compound crosscut 12" miter and it has a ton of board feet cuts on it. (Bad sentence, but you get my drift.) I previously had a 10" Makita "chop saw" (an "over the top model") which could only cut 3x6s w/o flipping the wood over to finish the cut. I would definitely recommend the sliding models: I frequently cut 2x10 and 2x12s on mine. (I've read good things about the newer Bosch models tho I've not used one personally.) <br clear="none"></div>

The depth is limited by the distance from the table surface to the blade washer (or whatever blade guard is mounted) and allowing for the blade's depth below the table surface. Thus, a 12" blade will allow you to cut thru a 5" thick (+/-) board, assuming it has the power and the density of the wood, etc.<br clear="none"></div>

I have my dad’s RAS (circa 1950 or 1960) and I use it for rough cuts (precise crosscuts on TS sled). I always said when the RAS dies, I’ll get a miter saw. Now 60-70 years later, darn thing is still running! I’ve been researching miter saws and the DeWalt DWS780 (12”) keeps popping up as top saw. Is yours the slider? I’m wondering if saws that come up over the top (vs sliders) have a greater depth capacity?<u></u><u></u></span></div>
