I make furniture and most of the pieces that I make with doors have inset doors, so I don't have to worry about adding for the overlay.


Here is the rule of thumb that I use


Door Width - 2(stile width) + 2(the depth of your slot). Panels subtract 1/16" - 1/8" From the width for expansion and let them float.


Remember if you are doing overlay doors add twice the amount of the overlay to the length of both you stiles and rails.


This should get you pretty close.
