2/3 yrs. ago I found Rogers live cam I watched him work his magic on the lathe quite a few times before I entered the chat so I could ask him more questions than a 2 yr. old. He was always very gracious and answered all my inane questions. I learned a great deal from him in the short time I knew him I soon found out what a quick wit and a great sense of humor he has. When he was making his ornaments I watched his live cam I found the skill and efficiency of his process fascinating. He posted some pictures of his ornaments on the chat I commented how beautiful I thought they all were and told him which one I thought was the best. A week or so later I get a package on my porch from Roger you quested it, it was the ornament that I thought was the pick of the litter, what a generous guy. We hardly knew each other had never met and, I felt like he was my friend. We did share the fact that we were both union carpenters and had fun with each other about that. I envy those of you that was able to spend time with him in his shop, what a treat that must have been. I watched the video of Franks shop I wish I could have been there to help you guys it looked like a good time(there must be something wrong with me ) any way I'm very sorry to hear about his worsening condition I will miss him.                                                                                                                                                                                    higtron(Dave Higgins)

For those of you who are regulars in our chat room on IRC then you already know Roger.
And, there are some of regulars on this list who might have dropped into our chat room for a bit and perhaps you got to visit with him.
There are fewer still who have met Roger; they've seen him, sat down with him and chatted with him.
The list dwindles down to those damn few who were lucky enough to work with and alongside of him:
Emmrys and TimV - visited his house.  Roger entertained with instruction on the lathe
Beamer - went to Chicago and made the drive down to New Lenox, Illinois
Jerry, Brandon, Ben, Owen, Frank - worked with Roger during Frank's shop build
Then there is the extremely rare and highly privileged person; the one who got to live with AND work with Roger:
Joe Johns - for ten days I worked with and alongside of him during Frank's shop build.  And each night we would retire to the camper where we would continue building on our friendship; bullshitting about this, that and everything in-between.  I learned from the first few seconds on that job the character of this man.  Honorable, diligent...I don't believe there are enough adjectives I could use.  I will miss my workmate, my bunk mate and most definitely my friend.
I will be making an honor box - think of it not as an urn but as a Treasure Box (thank you Emms for that suggestion).  A treasure box where those of you who might have been touched by Roger, in whatever way, can send me to be put into that box and I will send it his family.
Your treasures can be anything but try to keep them small - to give you some ideas here are things I learned about Roger over the years.  He enjoyed:
FishingBar-b-Queing (he has the Big Green Egg and raved about it all the damn time)Woodturning (his finese at the lathe can only be described as being extraordinary - see the picture below)He sang in a choir group (of which him and Diane were members.  Their choir has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall this coming November.  Yes, that Carnegie Hall)His family (wife, Diane, three sons, three daughter-in-laws, three grandchildren and another on the way)Food (I never seen a guy who could eat so much)Professional CarpenterPhotographyFlowersMovies and TV shows (he couldn't get enough of Game of Thrones)Cartoons (he worshiped Bugs Bunny)Games and challenges (think trivia and intellectual stuff)Tool making (he made woodworking tools - squares and bow saws to name a couple)Turkey hunting (you oughta read his story about that event)
I'm sure the list goes on but for some reason my screen is getting blurry.
If you want to send me something to put into his Treasure Box my address is:
Twisted Knot Woodshop51 Carlyle LaneRonan, MT. 59864
I would like to have received everything by May 15th so I can get some idea how big to make the Treasure Box.
Below are pictures.  The first one is Roger on the left, grandson Adam and his son Brian.  The second is one of his turned ornaments (I know Beamer and I both have one of his masterpiece creations - there may be others here blessed with one) but the picture isn't golden enough - you have to hold it in your hand and inspect it with the same eye Roger used...the eye of love.
I will miss my friend.
