[Woodworkers] Secrets to Stenciling with a Router

I have seen several router template kits which advise to link the letters
together and tape them onto the board with blue masking tape.  When I have
tried this in the past I end up pushing the template letters around.  Is
there a secret to doing this correctly?  Do I need to route the letters in
multiple passes?
